Monumental Merseyside City Walks led by Prof Iain Jackson
Following the informative presentation at last year’s Wotherspoon Lecture on the monumental work of the architect Herbert J Rowse, Prof Iain Jackson lead two 90-minute walks, stopping off at various points to look at the detail of his work in buildings such as Martin’s Bank, India Buildings and the cathedral-like wonders of the ventilation towers of the Queensway Tunnel.
Starting at St George’s Garden and the entrance of the ‘old’ tunnel, we walked down Dale Street ending at the Pier Head where Rowse’s work can also be seen on the other side of the River Mersey.
Prof Jackson identified and discussed the architectural detail, symbolism and craftsmanship seen in Rowse’s work, helping us to view these buildings in a new light.
